Near and far: Supporting families of convicts

As part of the Together for Greater Support for Families of Prisoners project, we held a workshop where we presented the new methodological guide "Close and Distant". This publication provides practical advice for families of convicts, professionals and organisations working with this target group.

The handbook was created thanks to the cooperation of VOLONTÉ CZECH, Yellow Ribbon and the Italian organization Gramigna OdV. It combines expert knowledge and practical experience in the Czech Republic and Italy to offer the most comprehensive support.

📌 What do you find in the handbook?

✔ How to maintain family relationships despite separation

✔ How to talk to children about the imprisonment of a parent

✔ How to counteract stigma and social isolation

✔ What support programmes exist in prisons

Supporting family ties is crucial not only for the resocialisation of convicts, but also for the mental well-being of their children. As Tina says:

🗣 "Family ties play a crucial role in the process of resocialization of convicts. If a convicted person is able to maintain a relationship with his/her child even while serving a sentence, it strengthens his/her responsibility and motivation to change. At the same time, it is crucial that the convicted person and his or her family provide sufficient support and communicate sensitively with the child."
