On February 6, 2025, we participated in a professional conference entitled Criminal Policy – Present and Future , organized by the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the CEELI Institute in Prague. This prestigious event provided space for an in-depth discussion on the current state of criminal policy, its challenges, and possible directions for future development.
Key topics and lectures
The conference focused on various aspects of criminal policy, with the program divided into several thematic blocks. For example, there was a discussion on how to punish effectively and at the same time prevent the abuse of criminal repression. Great attention was also paid to the topic of desistance and effective protection of society. A significant aspect of the conference was the precise analytical preparedness of individual experts, who presented relevant statistical data and analyzed in detail the strengths and weaknesses of their sector, thereby providing deeper insight into current challenges and possibilities for their solutions.
The discussion focused on key issues of current criminal policy, particularly individualization of punishments, prevention of recidivism, and effective interconnection of the various components of justice, social services, and the non-profit sector. Emphasis was placed on practical ways of implementing these measures and finding ways for their mutual coordination, which could contribute to the overall improvement of the functioning of the criminal justice system.
Inspiration for the future
One of the most interesting blocks was a comparison of Czech criminal policy with foreign models, with experts looking for answers to the question: Where can we draw inspiration for changing the criminal policy of the Czech Republic?
The whole day ended with a final discussion and informal networking over a glass of wine, where we had the opportunity to share our impressions and make new professional contacts.
Conclusion and our observations
The conference confirmed that Czech criminal policy faces many challenges, but at the same time there is a will to seek effective and fair solutions. We are glad that we could be part of this important event and contribute to the expert discussion.
