On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, a professional training course accredited by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs was held at Světlá nad Sázavou Prison.
The course, titled “System of Care in the Context of Addiction After Imprisonment”, was intended for prison staff and focused on supporting clients affected by addiction-related behavior.
The training was part of VOLONTÉ’s specialized programme for employees of the Czech Prison Service (VS ČR) who encounter clients struggling with addiction – both during incarceration and in the process of preparing for their release and reintegration into family and community life.
Theory, Practice, and Case Simulations
The programme was led by Mgr. Lukáš Verner, an addiction specialist and experienced trainer familiar with prison environments. He summarized the key principles of post-penitentiary care and presented intervention options based on clients’ levels of motivation – ranging from abstinence-based models to harm reduction strategies and tailored aftercare programs.
“The training was attended by 15 staff members from Světlá Prison – including chaplains, social workers, therapists, and correctional officers. Participants explored the full spectrum of post-release care options based on individual motivation and planning. Through role-playing and case simulations, they practiced selecting suitable interventions and services – from low-threshold programs to structured treatment centres,” said Lukáš Verner.
The training also emphasized the importance of understanding service networks, as well as recognizing the limits and challenges of working with incarcerated individuals. The practical focus allowed for meaningful peer exchange among professionals from different roles.
Continuing to Support Professional Excellence
Addiction remains a crucial topic in the context of imprisonment, release, and reintegration. We believe that combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience – while respecting each client’s unique reality – leads to more effective interventions and long-term change.
The training took place as part of the project VOL Rodinu (registration no. CZ.03.02.02/00/22_017/0000254), implemented with the support of the Operational Programme Employment Plus (OPZ+), co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+).
