The INTENS project was completed on schedule by 31. 05. 2024.
We have successfully completed the INTENS project, which was implemented with the support of the General Directorate of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic. This project was aimed at addressing the long-standing problem of lack of effective rehabilitation programmes for non-parole sex offenders in custody. These offenders have not yet had access to sufficiently effective therapeutic programmes to help reduce their risk of reoffending and facilitate their return to society.
The prisons participating in the project were Heřmanice, Horní Slavkov, Oráčov, Nové Sedlo and Bělušice.
The main objective of the INTENS project was to design and pilot test a new therapeutic programme aimed at non-paraphilic sex offenders. Within the framework of the project, we developed a complex process that included selection of suitable convicts, motivational interventions, risk assessment and the establishment of groups. Communication materials and letters were also developed to guide prison staff in selecting inmates and introducing the program.
GLM+ development
The original plan included cooperation with foreign partners, but unfortunately time and capacity constraints prevented this cooperation. Subsequently, we established a successful collaboration with German colleagues from the JVA Brandenburg an der Havel prison, with whom we developed a proposal for a new therapeutic programme called GLM+ as part of the incubation phase of the innovation. This programme is based on the proven Good Lives Model (GLM), supplemented by additional modules targeting non-paraphilic violent offenders.
The proposed GLM+ programme, as currently designed, would run for 9 months and include a total of 756 hours of therapeutic activities. The programme comprises 12 core modules, including topics such as life patterns, sexuality, factors leading to offending, non-criminal thinking and relationships. The programme has been designed for groups of eight to ten participants.
Future plans
The successful completion of the pilot phase of the GLM+ programme within the incubation phase of the INTENS solution development has confirmed its effectiveness and relevance for the rehabilitation of this specific group of offenders. In the future, we plan to develop and expand the programme to other prisons and to include it in the standard portfolio of programmes of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic. We believe that this programme will help to reduce the risk of recidivism and increase safety in society.
Conclusion
The INTENS project has brought not only the design of a new therapeutic programme, but also a significant change in the approach to the rehabilitation of sex offenders in the Czech Republic. This innovative approach contributes to improving the safety and quality of life for all of us.
Thank you to everyone involved!
